Wayland’s Smithy & The Ridgeway

For walkers and history-lovers alike, the Ridgeway is a must. Often described as Britain’s oldest road, this ancient way runs along the downs above the Vale of White Horse. English Heritage+1 One of the highlights along the route is Wayland’s Smithy — a Neolithic chambered long barrow built around 3,400–3,600 BC, just about a mile’s walk from the chalk horse. Legend has it that travellers once left their worn-out horses here with a coin and returned to find the shoe replaced by the invisible smith-god Wayland.
This gives you direct access to a landscape that’s rich with myth, historic layers and scenic walking.
